What Is Preventing You from Living a More Meaningful Life?
What is preventing you from making your life more meaningful and valuable?
We cannot ignore the effects of the economic and social conditions in which we live. The cost of living, uncertainty and the difficulties we face can affect both our opportunities and our satisfaction with life.
However, we also know that financial resources alone do not create a meaningful life. Meaning can sometimes come from a relationship, a small achievement, learning something new or contributing to a purpose we value.
Some time ago, I thought about what was preventing me from making my own life more meaningful and valuable.
I thought about it for a long time.
I found many reasons and listed them. At first, they all seemed to be outside my control. Then I noticed the invisible threads connecting me to these reasons.
Some threads were thick, while others were thin. Some were flexible, while others were quite firm.
Some of these threads were formed by my values. Others came from my beliefs and prejudices. Some were made of my fears, anxieties and the things I could not let go of.
I had not created all these threads, and I could not remove them all by myself. However, I was holding one end of some of them.
I could choose how tightly to pull them, which ones to loosen and which ones to try to release. Even if I could not break some of them, I could change my relationship with them.
This awareness showed me something important:
I cannot control everything in my life, but I can see more clearly the areas that I may be able to influence.
While writing these lines, I remembered a sentence I wrote several years ago:
“A new year will not be new unless you renew yourself.”
You can now ask yourself:
Which threads in my life are limiting me?
Which of these threads truly belong to me?
Which ones can I change, loosen or release?
What attitude can I choose towards the conditions I cannot change?
Perhaps change does not begin by breaking every thread. It begins by recognising which ones we are holding and why.
