Michelangelo created the Pietà when he was still in his early twenties and completed David a few years later. These works, considered masterpieces of Renaissance sculpture, are striking examples of how life and emotion can be given to a hard material such as marble.

In Michelangelo’s approach to art, a sculpture is not simply a shape added to a block of marble. It is a form already hidden inside the stone. The artist’s task is to carefully remove the excess material covering that form.

This approach also offers a thought-provoking metaphor for personal development:

Who is the person within me that I want to reveal?

How clearly can I see the habits, fears and beliefs that limit me?

What do I need to let go of to move closer to the person I want to become?

Am I truly ready to let go, or am I continuing to hold on to things that I know are standing in my way?

Removing the excess material is not enough to create a sculpture. First, the artist needs to see the form they want to reveal. In our personal development, we cannot decide what to keep, what to change and what to leave behind without first choosing our direction.

Perhaps we should therefore begin by asking:

What kind of person and leader do I want to become?

Are my current choices taking me in that direction?

What obstacles stand between me and the person I imagine?

Which of these obstacles can I change, which can I accept and which can I leave behind?

Developing ourselves does not always mean adding something new. Sometimes real development means recognising and releasing the thoughts, habits and burdens that no longer serve us.

Perhaps the aim is not to give ourselves a new identity, but to reveal what has been hidden beneath the excess.
